The TASP Legislative Platform
HB 6 proposes significant changes to the state's school discipline policies. This bill expands the authority of educators to suspend students, including our youngest students in PreK through 2nd grade. Currently, law restricts suspensions for students in PreK through 2nd grade to serious offenses only, but HB 6 seeks to broaden the criteria for suspension. The bill also removes current protections for our students experiencing homelessness. As school psychologists, we know exclusionary discipline practices don't work. The 89th Legislative Session is almost here! The official TASP Legislative Platform has been approved and adopted by the executive board. TASP will be working with allied organizations to continue to advocate for increased access to school mental health services, improved access to school psychological services, promoting best practices for safe and supportive schools, and advancing social justice for all students.
Review the full legislative platform so that you can use it as a tool in your advocacy efforts. Remember to share the platform with your state representatives. Stay tuned for calls to action once the session kicks off in January!
